Otter Challenge 2027

23+24 September '26

The Otter-TERREX Trail traces 42 kilometres of rugged coastal paths along South Africa’s famed Garden Route. Open to runners for just one weekend each year, this protected route affords participants an intensely exclusive and privileged experience: a rare, soulful, almost spiritual journey.

But the Trail provides only a glimpse of the serene beauty and raw splendour that South Africa has to offer. Travel a short distance into the Eastern Cape and you can experience some of the best Big Five game viewing in the country. Or hop on a quick flight and you’re in the Western Cape, where mountains melt into the vineyard-covered valleys of the country’s world-famous winelands.

The Otter Challenge

Set along South Africa’s famed Garden Route, the Otter TERREX Trail traces 42 kilometres of rugged coastal paths through ancient indigenous forests and fynbos-covered cliffs. Open to runners for one weekend only each year, this protected route reveals the very best of our dramatic coastline: from roaring ocean swells to deep-green forest stillness. With no spectator access and no year-round entry, it becomes an intensely exclusive experience: a rare, soulful, almost spiritual journey.

Beyond the trail, the adventure shifts from wild terrain to human connection. The Cape Winelands’ rolling vineyards and mountain foothills meet the open plains and wildlife of safari country, but it’s the people who shape the experience. Here, Africa’s diverse cultures welcome you with warmth, generosity, and stories passed down through generations. It’s a chance to unwind and recover while discovering a side of South Africa shaped not only by landscape, but by heritage, hospitality and shared moments.
